Why is this magazine called Retort...isn’t that a glass contraption used in alchemical processes?
Yes…it is also a to make a reply, especially a quick, caustic, or witty one…or to present a counter argument, or to retaliate, if you like. It can also be said that a ‘retort’ is the sound a gun makes when you fire it.
Is Retort NSFW?
Most of the time Retort is safe for viewing at work, the majority of content that could be in-any-way deemed ‘offensive’ is labeled NSFW in the kicker above the title of the post, and anything outlandish is published below the fold.
Do you really have photographs of the notorious outlaw street artist Banksy in your possession?

How long has Retort been online?
Since April 2001. 
Who is the publisher and editor of Retort? Is it independent or is there some giant multi-national corporation intent on washing brains and entraining the masses hidden away in the background?
Retort is published by one guy with a laptop. You can read about him here. There are several contributing editors, you can read about them here. Occasionally we invite a Guest Editor to contribute. A few legendary readers over the years have made some small donations, it always gets invested back into maintaining the site. Retort has never received any sponsorship or arts grants, government or corporate. Retort has nothing to sell you but brilliant art and literature. We don’t even have advertising…who clicks that shit anyway? (Not Retort readers, when we tried it).
I am a writer/artist, if I make a submission to Retort how long does it take the editor to respond?
You have probably read on Duotrope that Retort only responds if we accept your work for publication. That used to be true, and only because the editor could not possibly respond to everyone, due to time contraints etc. etc. Now Retort has a submission manager, we do our best to reply to everyone, although the rejection letter is a form letter, just so you know. You may hear within one day to 3 months…not usually more than that.
What happened to Retort’s Archive, recently I noticed a couple years worth of stuff disappear?
Retort has suffered a few hackers over the years. Really, we have no idea why. Retort is archived by The National Library of Australia, but their archives are a little sketchy. The editor is making an effort to recover some of the more interesting content with The Retort Magazine Archives Project during 2012.
Is it true that Retort Magazine is published by Anarchists?
If by Anarchy you mean the binary opposite of Synarchy – then yes.
