If you are looking to submit visual art or photography for the print quarterly please read the guidelines carefully for resolution and size specifications. If you are submitting text based work to the quarterly please study the submissions deadlines in the SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR RETORT QUARTERLY PRINT JOURNAL below.
You will hear from us should your work be accepted for publication, unfortunately, due to time restraints, you will not hear from us if you are unsuccessful at this time.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR RETORT ONLINE
Retort Magazine accepts unsolicited submissions for publication online all year round from new to advanced career artists, writers and poets in all disciplines and practices from anywhere on planet earth. We favour the cutting edge over the blunt of the handle, the avante garde over backward walking, the delinquent imagination over the hammered economic mind. We publish whenever something brilliant arrives and are always dipping into the murky depths of a MASSIVE bulging submissions folder.
TEXT – RETORT ONLINE PUBLISHES NEW TEXTS AT LEAST A FEW TIMES A WEEK (OBSERVE NOTICE ABOVE FOR UPDATES)
Please do NOT double space manuscripts. Please DO tag what type of submissions you are sending in the Subject line – eg. ‘Your Name’, Fiction.
Poetry: – please submit no more than 5 poems – no word count restrictions – experimental poesy is our favorite, we do look at more traditional forms, occasionally.
Short Stories/Prose: – 5000 words is getting lengthy – maybe label it a ‘tall’ story instead.
Articles: – non- fiction texts (reviews, interviews, journalistic pieces, social criticism, philosophical essays, cultural essays etc) are usually 2500 words – max 5000. Illustrations/photographs etc that may accompany texts are welcome.VISUAL ART – RETORT ONLINE USUALLY FEATURES ONE ARTIST PER MONTH
DIMENSIONS : max width 1000px. max resolution 100dpi
Email your Photographs, digital art, scans of your notebooks, representations/photographs of your paintings (whatever can be sent via email) please only send recognisable formats such as .gif. jpg. If you are going to submit more than 10 pieces please use winzip and send the .zip file.

We publish 4 issues a year, approx – February – May – August – November.

Please submit your visual art at no higher than 100dpi – if your submission is successful we will contact you for high resolution versions.

Retort Magazine would LOVE to be able to pay authors and artists, but Retort is an artist run publication and receives NO funding whatsoever – all going well, one day this may change. Payment is the ten of thousands of readers who will be viewing your work and the knowledge that anything we publish will be archived for eternity by the National Library of Australia.
